Wayne State Splits Series with Minot State

Trey Wells with Five Home Runs on the Day including Game Two Walk off Homer

A day that featured 13 home runs combined between the two teams resulted in a split series for Wayne State Baseball. Minot State took game one 11-7 while the Wildcats took a walk off home run to win game two 13-12 in 10 innings. WSC moves to 15-16 on the season with a 9-8 record in the NSIC. Minot State moves to 19-11 with a 10-8 record in the NSIC.  

GAME ONE: Minot State 11 Wayne State 7

Wayne State would drop the first game of the series 11-7 despite a three home run outing from catcher Trey Wells. Minot State would score 11 runs off of 12 hits in the win. Wayne State would score seven runs off of nine hits with an error in the loss. 

Minot would jump out to the early 3-0 lead in the first inning on the Wildcats first off a two run home run from Gunner Kozlowitz to right center and then another home run from Beavers right fielder Javier Gutierrez down the left field line. 

The 'Cats would take till the third inning to answer the pair of hom runs from the Beavers, scoring two in the inning. Cade Lynam would get two RBIs off his single up the middle to cut into the Beavers lead at 3-2. 

Gutierrez would open up the fourth inning with another home run for the Beavers moving the lead to 4-2. A fielding error by WSC would allow another run to score making it 5-2. Minot State would go on to score a pair of runs to end the inning making it 7-2. Wells would get his first home run of the game in the bottom half of the inning making it 7-3 in favor of the Beavers. 

Both teams would score two runs in the fifth inning. The Beavers would use a triple to extend the lead to 9-3 before the 'Cats would answer back with a triple of their own from Carter Thomas to right center allowing Cade Lynam to score. Collin Lynam would then singled to center field to get their second run of the inning making it 9-5. 

Minot State would add two more in the sixth making it 11-5 before Wayne State would use another home run from Wells making it 11-6 with one more inning to play. Wells would use one more hom run in the seventh to make the final score 11-7 in favor of the Beavers. 

Wells was the leading batter for the 'Cats going 3-4 from the plate with three home runs and three RBIs. Cade Lynam would add two RBIs in the loss for Wayne State. Brody Sintek would get the loss for WSC while pitching 3.1 innings producing three strikeouts. He is now 1-4 on the season. 

GAME TWO: Wayne State 13 Minot State 12 10 Innings 

Game two would feature eight combined home runs between the Wildcats and the Beavers including a Wells walk off home run to win the game. Wayne State would score 13 runs off of 15 hits with five errors. Minot State would score 12 runs off of 15 hits with three errors in the loss. 

Minot State would capitalize off early Wildcat mistakes in the second game to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Wayne State would strike back in the bottom half of the inning with a Carter Thomas two-run homer to center field making it 2-2. Wells would come out to bat his fourth total home run on the day between the two games to give WSC the 4-2 lead after one. 

Minot State would use back to back home runs in the third inning to score three runs to take the lead back at 5-4. Thomas would help get the Wildcats even in the bottom half with an RBI single allowing Chase Douglas to score. Hunter Babe would force a walk with the bases loaded to bring in the game leading run at 6-5 in favor of WSC. The Wildcats would score one more run making it 7-5 at the end of two. 

Minot State wouldn't take long to tie up the game, getting another home run in the third inning making it 7-7 after three innings. 

Gunnar Kozlowitz would get the Beavers the lead in the fourth inning after an RBI double to right center making it 8-7. Kozlowitz would then score off a Wildcat wild pitch making it 9-7 Minot State. Wildcats would get one back in the bottom half of the inning off a Quinn McCafferty single to left allowing Babe to score. The Beavers would still hold the 9-8 lead after four innings. 

The Beavers would extend their lead early in the fifth inning with another home run making it 10-8. Minot State would capitalize on a Wayne State error to bring in one more run at 11-8. Braden Cannon would be up for the 'Cats to begin the bottom half of the fifth inning getting his first home run of the day making it 11-9 Minot State. A Collin Lynam sacrifice fly would get the 'Cats within one before a double from Babe tied up the game for WSC at 11-11 after five innings. 

The two teams would go scoreless during the next three innings bringing a tied up ball game to the ninth inning. Minot State would get on base with a double to open up the inning. The second baseman Derek Kay would then steal third base and advance home on a throwing error from WSC to make it 12-11 in favor of Minot State. Wildcats would load the bases in the bottom half of the ninth with  a single bunt from Cade Lynam putting runners in scoring positions. Collin Lynam would bring in the game tying run with a sacrifice fly out to center field making it 12-12 with two outs. The game would head to extra innings tied at 12-12. Wells would score a 2 run walk off home run to win the game. However, Wells was ruled out for passing the runner that was on first base making the final 13-12 in favor of Wayne State. 

Thomas was the leading batter for Wayne State going 3-6 from the plate with three RBIs and three runs scored. Wells was 2-5 from the plate with two home runs for Wayne State. Wells and Thomas each have three RBIs for WSC. Braden Cannon would get the pitching win for Wayne State moving to 2-0 on the season. Cannon pitched 5.2 innings for the 'Cats with seven strikeouts on the day only giving up three hits.

Wayne State will next be in action when they go on the road this coming weekend April 14th and 15th to take on Upper Iowa. First pitch is scheduled for noon both days with a Friday doubleheader and Saturday nine inning contest.
