Box Score Wayne State scored four runs in the fifth and sixth innings, then held off a seventh inning rally by Wayne State of Michigan to edge the Warriors 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the National Training Center Spring Softball Games in Clermont, Florida. The Wildcats improved to 11-7 with the win while the Warriors slip to 4-7.
Wayne State Michigan appeared to be in control of the game through four-plus innings, scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings, to hold a 2-0 lead on the Wildcats while limiting WSC to just three hits entering the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Wildcats came up with three runs on three hits with a couple of stolen bases in the fifth inning to grab a 3-2 lead.
Lauren Laudick walked and later scored on an RBI single from
Leah Chance for the first Wildcat run. Chance and
Jordyn Klein (singled) both scored on a
Kennadi Borngrebe double to center field putting the 'Cats ahead 3-2.
Wayne State added another run in the sixth inning for a 4-2 lead as
Jordyn Rochholz was hit by a pitch to start the inning and scored on a two-out error by the Warriors when pinch-hitter
Taylor Fritz reached base on a WSU fielding error.
The Warriors used a two-out rally in the seventh and had the tying run on second base before the Wildcats finally got out of the inning to hang on for the 4-3 win. Two Wildcat errors and an infield single allowed Wayne State (Mich) get within one at 4-3 with the tying run at second, but senior reliever Sami Felt recorded a ground out to end the game as the Wildcats held on for the one-run win.
Wayne State held a 7-4 edge in hits over the Warriors. Borngrebe had a pair of doubles, going 2 for 3 with two RBI.
Jordyn Klein doubled and singled, going 2 for 4 with one run scored. Freshman
Leah Chance also had two hits with a pair of singles going 2 for 3 with an RBI and run scored.
For the Wildcats in the circle, sophomore
Taylor Coleman started and worked the first two innings striking out five batters while allowing one run on one hit. Felt came on in relief and pitched the final five innings to notch the win (2-2), giving up three hits and two runs with three strikeouts.
Wayne State continues play Sunday at the NTC Spring Softball Games in Florida as the Wildcats face Concord (N.C.) Sunday at 8 a.m. and Eckerd (Fla.) in a 1 p.m. contest.
