'Cats shoot new school record 293, move up to third on final day of Firekeeper Open

Kenkel matches school record with one-under par 71 Tuesday

            It was a record-setting day for the Wayne State College women's golf team Tuesday in the final round of the two-day, 54-hole Firekeeper Open played in Mayetta, Kansas and hosted by Washburn University.  The 'Cats fired a new school team record of 293 (+5) and moved up to a third-place finish with a 54-hole score of 915 following rounds of 313-309 Monday and a final round 293 Tuesday.  The previous school record was 297 set in the 2022-23 season at Victory Links Golf Course in Blaine, Minnesota at the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bear Classic. 
            Nebraska-Kearney and host Washburn tied for the team title at 908 with Wayne State next in third at 915 seven shots back in the 13-team field.  Central Oklahoma edged Augustana for fourth place 918-923 with Concordia-St. Paul finishing sixth at 926. Rounding out the top 10 teams were Northwest Missouri State at 949, Minnesota Crookston with 959, Fort Hays State ninth at 975 and Dodge City Community College 10th with 977.
            There were also several individual school records set Tuesday as well, starting with junior Hailey Kenkel from Grand Island (Grand Island Senior HS).  She fired a one-under par 71 Tuesday to tie the individual 18-hole school record set last season by teammate Camryn Johnson (3/31/25 at Paradise Pointe GC in Smithville, Mo.). 
            Another individual school record was set by Millard North junior Erica Lee, who posted a new school record 54-hole score on a par-72 course by shooting scores of 75-76-74 for a 54-hole total of 225, tied for sixth overall in a field of 81 players at +9.  The previous school record was held by Jazmine Taylor with a 229 (+13) at Paradise Pointe in Smithville, Mo. during the 2023 NSIC Championships. 
            Kenkel was one shot behind Lee for the Wildcats at 226 to place eighth overall after recording scores of 80-75-71.
            Broken Bow sophomore Camryn Johnson tied for 15th overall posting a 231 with rounds of 78-77-76.  Sophomore Gaia Stancikova was next at 232 to place 19th overall thanks to a final round even-par 72 Tuesday to go with Monday rounds of 80 and 81.
            Rounding out Wayne State's team scoring was senior Meg Thompson in a tie for 60th overall at 254.  Thompson posted a final round 78 Tuesday along with scores of 88 and 88 Monday.
            Wayne State had three individuals also play in the tournament.  Senior Saffire Sayre posted scores of 77-77-82 to finish at 236 and tied for 23rd overall.  Junior Kylie Powers fired a career-best round of 80 Tuesday and finished the two-day tournament with a 54-hole score of 255 to tie for 72nd in the event (92-83-80).  Grand Island Northwest junior Olivia Ottman also posted a career-best score Tuesday with an 82 combined with Monday rounds of 94 and 87 for a 54-hole meet score of 263. 
            Wayne State's next meet is Sunday, April 5 – Tuesday, April 7 when the Wildcats travel to Monkey Island, Oklahoma for the Spring Regional Preview Meet at Shangri-La Golf Course and Resort.
