Dennis Kirby was a three year starter at halfback on the Wayne State football team for the 1964, 65 and 66 seasons playing under Coach John Jermier going 18-8.
Kirby was named Most Valuable Player in 1965 and 66 seasons and was a three time All Nebraska College Conference and two time NAIA All-District 11 selection as a junior and senior. He was the leading rusher on the 1966 team as a senior with 459 yards on 61 carries and six TD’s (7.5 avg.) for 91.8 yards per game to earn NAIA honorable mention All-American honors. Kirby served as co-captain on the 1966 team with two-time NAIA All-American Bob Kruse. He rushed for 465 yards as a junior and was also the placekicker leading the team in scoring with 40 points.
Kirby is a graduate of David City St. Mary’s High School where he was a two time All-State high school football player. He was inducted into the WSC Athletic Hall of Fame on October 8, 2011.
