Clarence Schwarz
Clarence Schwarz was a three-sport standout at Wayne State College from 1925-27 and 1929-1930, starring in basketball, football and track. He earned his WSC degree in only three school years and went out for sports only nine times, but lettered all nine times. An All-Conference athlete, Schwarz played end and fullback in football, center in basketball and threw the shot put in track.
Schwarz first attended WSC for two years from 1925-27. After two years of teaching and coaching basketball and track at Tripp, S.D. for an annual salary of $1,200, he returned to WSC and graduated in 1930. In the 1929-30 school year, he was an all-conference fullback after moving to the position from end and basketball center. In track, he was a shot putter who apparently was undefeated during his final season.
After graduation, Clarence coached, taught and served as administrator for the next 40 years. Schwarz coached and taught at Pender, Laurel and South Sioux City and was also superintendent of schools at Pender, Dakota City and South Sioux City. In his second season at Pender, he led the football team to an undefeated season. Schwarz would retire after serving 42 years in the education field.
Schwarz was inducted into the WSC Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984.
